Cluster Flies

The so far mild Winter has meant its been a slow season for some of the Autumn/Winter pests. Cluster flies have barely been seen.

But now as the nights are becoming colder and colder cluster flies are becoming a bigger problem for customers.

Cluster flies are a field fly who spend most of their lives out in open fields. They have a parasitic larval stage that eats earthworms.

They only become a nuisance to home owners when the temperature drops and the adult fly wants to hibernate to avoid the worst of the weather. They cluster in sometimes huge numbers in roof voids. They have an aggregation pheromone that brings more flies in to the huddle.

To treat we use fumigation devices or contact sprays. In the photo a fumigation bomb is being used to fumigate a small void at the top of flats.

Kitchen Cockroaches

Cockroaches in a commercial kitchen can be a huge problem. To remove all residues of food debris in a busy kitchen is extremely hard so there will always be food availability making baiting hard.

However using cockroach bait is still the most effective method. It needs to be applied to where the main populations of cockroaches are.

Using residual insecticides can still be effective. In the photo the technician is applying the insecticide behind the metal cladding which is a common place for cockroaches to hide.

All sizes of rats are encountered in domestic properties but occasionally some true whoppers turn up. This bad boy was bigger than my size 10 boot.

No wonder the customer could hear it making itself at home in the kitchen in the night time.

A big part of our job is to provide a routine monitoring service to commercial and industrial properties. This includes internal and external monitor/control points for rodents.

In the photo the technician is fixing control points in to the bin area of a tower block of flats. This will not just monitor to tell if rats or mice have been there but also kill them at the same time.

One More Bite Can’t Hurt…

Most baits we use to control rodents are anticoagulant. They have a chronic effect to prevent the target species becoming bait shy. This means that they have to feed on the bait for 4 or more days before it becomes lethal to the animal.

Often when an animal is poisoned they will die in their sleep so will die in the nest, trying to sleep of the effects of the poison. Sometimes however they will try and get one last meal to fend off the poison without realising that the trusted food source is the poison.

This mouse was found in such a manner on a bait tray that was positioned under a kitchen plinth.
